Identification of valuable factors that can facilitate therapeutic decision-making between intensive chemotherapy and investigational treatment strategies is warranted. METHODS: Analysis of proliferative white blood cell [WBC] count and invasive percentage of blast cells in peripheral blood characteristics of leukemic blasts at diagnosis is presented in a population of promyelocytic leukemia AML patients who are older than than 60 years and have been selected for entering onto five successive clinical trials combining an anthracycline and cytarabine. Median overall survivals were shorter for the hyperproliferative groups 5. Although these factors remain valuable for identifying leukemia behavior, our study demonstrated that results of intensive chemotherapy in elderly patients remained poor, whatever the prognostic group.
This is a corrected version of the article that appeared in print. An elevated white blood cell count has many potential etiologies, including malignant and nonmalignant causes. It is important to use age- and pregnancy-specific normal ranges for the white blood cell count. A repeat complete blood count with peripheral smear may provide helpful information, such as types and maturity of white blood cells, uniformity of white blood cells, and toxic granulations. The leukocyte differential may show eosinophilia in parasitic or allergic conditions, or it may reveal lymphocytosis in childhood viral illnesses. Leukocytosis is a common sign of infection, particularly bacterial, and should prompt physicians to identify other signs and symptoms of infection.
