Updated Edition, April 04, This new edition of our report on Asian Americans provides data on 14 smaller Asian origin groups with population counts below , in the Census, along with detailed data on the economic and demographic characteristics of adults in nine of these groups. Our original report contained survey and Census data on all Asian Americans as well as specific information on the six largest Asian origin groups. Asian Americans are the highest-income, best-educated and fastest-growing racial group in the United States. They are more satisfied than the general public with their lives, finances and the direction of the country, and they place more value than other Americans do on marriage, parenthood, hard work and career success, according to a comprehensive new nationwide survey by the Pew Research Center.
Chinese Americans are Americans who are descendants of Chinese , particularly Han Chinese ancestry, which also includes American-born Chinese persons. Chinese Americans constitute one group of overseas Chinese and also a subgroup of East Asian Americans, which is a further subgroup of Asian Americans. Many Chinese Americans are immigrants along with their descendants from mainland China , Hong Kong , Macau , Taiwan ,  as well as from other regions that include large populations of the Chinese diaspora , especially Southeast Asia and some Western countries like Canada , the United Kingdom , Australia , New Zealand and France. The Chinese American community is the largest overseas Chinese community outside Asia. It is also the third largest community in the Chinese diaspora, behind the Chinese communities in Thailand and Malaysia.
Asian-origin populations have historically been in the territory that would eventually become the United States since the 16th century. The first major wave of Asian immigration occurred in the late 19th century, primarily in Hawaii and the West Coast. Asian Americans experienced exclusion, and limitations to immigration, by the United States law between and , and were largely prohibited from naturalization until the s. Since the elimination of Asian exclusion laws and the reform of the immigration system in the Immigration and Nationality Act of , there has been a large increase in the number of immigrants to the United States from Asia.
